Cannabis use by a Police Recruit

3 December 2018

In April 2018 Police were advised of allegations that a recruit had used cannabis while at home on a break from the Royal New Zealand Police College training course.

The recruit admitted he had smoked cannabis.

Police decided not to prosecute on the basis that it would not be in the public interest to do so; one of the considerations being that the recruit would likely receive a nominal penalty, if any.

Police determined that the recruit's actions breached the Police Code of Conduct. The recruit resigned from Police before any sanction was imposed and did not graduate from Police College.

The Authority reviewed the Police investigations and agreed with the decisions reached.
