Delayed response to family harm incident in Counties Manukau

19 December 2018

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a notification where it was alleged that Police in Counties Manukau District took 3.5 hours to respond to a family harm incident.

When Police arrived, the suspect assaulted the officers and Police needed to use pepper spray and physical force to arrest him. The Authority considered the amount of force used was appropriate in the situation, but considered two of the six emergency calls were poorly managed.

The Authority also considered there was a delay in having a unit deployed to the incident in a timely manner and some of this was due to the Acting Sergeant not being proactive in how he was organising his team.

The involved staff have been dealt with through a confidential employment process.
