Allegation that officer did not properly record exhibits

29 April 2019

Police were called to an address where a suspected clandestine laboratory in a private dwelling had exploded, injuring one of the occupants. The occupants were arrested by Police in regards this. When Police were clearing the address, one officer located a firearm in a case. The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an allegation that a Police officer in the Waitemata District falsely recorded that the firearm case was open and part of the handle of the gun was visible. The falsehood was quickly discovered and corrected and the Court was provided factually correct information.

The Authority agreed with the Police decision that no criminal proceedings be taken against the officer. The matter was instead dealt with through an employment investigation and the Authority also considers the resolution of that investigation to be appropriate.
