Allegation of assault against off duty officer

27 June 2019

The Authority was notified of a complaint in September 2018 alleging an assault by an off-duty officer at a recreational reserve in Auckland. The complaint alleged that the officer pushed and grabbed the complainant whose dog was swimming in a reserve wetland against local bylaws.

Police conducted a full investigation into the matter. Although the facts in issue were disputed by the officer, the investigation found that his use of force was unjustified and that he had handled the situation inappropriately while off duty. He was dealt with through an employment process that resulted in a sanction. The Authority agreed with this outcome and the complainant was satisfied with it.
