Police officer prosecuted for Careless Driving

4 June 2019

A Police officer working in the Counties Manukau District observed a vehicle driving through a red light at an intersection and took action to stop this vehicle. While the officer activated his emergency lights and siren, there was a large vehicle also moving through the intersection which limited the visibility of the officer and other members of the public. Another civilian vehicle entered the intersection on a green light and collided with the Police vehicle.

Due to the officer deciding to drive through the intersection where there was limited visibility, Police conducted both criminal and employment investigations against the officer which the Authority oversaw.

At the conclusion of the investigations, the officer was prosecuted for careless driving and an appropriate performance sanction was imposed on the officer. The Authority agrees with the Police actions.
