Police pursuit of truck in Waikato

13 March 2019

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a 2018 pursuit in the Waikato region involving a large truck which had been driven into the front of a Police station, causing extensive damage. Police deployed tyre deflation devices which proved ineffective, then discharged a rifle in an unsuccessful attempt to deflate one of the truck's front tyres. At the conclusion of the pursuit, an officer discharged a Taser towards the driver who sustained no serious injuries. The Police investigation concluded the pursuit was conducted consistently with fleeing driver policy and the use of the firearm and Taser were both justified in the exceptional circumstances.

The Authority agreed with the Police investigation outcomes.
