13 March 2019

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a notification regarding a man who tried to harm himself while in Police custody at the Wellington District Court. The incident took place while the man was waiting to speak to his lawyer after being remanded in custody, and three minutes after he had last been checked by Police. When the man's actions were noticed, Police entered the room and ensured his safety. There was no loss of consciousness or any other injuries. The Authority considers Police responded appropriately to the situation and did not recommend any further action be taken.
