Accidental discharge of firearm

18 March 2019

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a notification where it was alleged that a Police officer inadvertently discharged a live round from a Bushmaster M4 semi-automatic rifle inside a Police station. The live round went through an internal wall into an office and embedded itself in an external wall. After it was determined that the officer's actions did not meet the threshold for a criminal prosecution, Police carried out an employment investigation. It was found that the officer's actions did amount to misconduct and he was dealt with through a confidential employment process. The Authority agree with the outcome.
