Off duty allegation of Assault - Bay of Plenty

4 November 2019

The Authority oversaw a criminal investigation by Police into an incident in the Bay of Plenty where an off-duty male sergeant was alleged to have assaulted a female constable at a Christmas function, held at her home.

Police established that a disagreement between the sergeant and constable developed into a physical assault, where the sergeant pushed, punched and pulled the hair of the constable. The assault resulted in the constable suffering bruising and tenderness to her head, face and hip. The sergeant faced criminal charges and pleaded guilty to common assault, before resigning from the Police.
