Officer inappropriately discloses information to a lawyer

6 November 2019

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a complaint where it was alleged an officer from the Tasman District inappropriately disclosed information which had been provided to him by the complainant, who, at that time, was applying for a Protection Order in the Family Court. The complainant felt the officer had placed his wife and him at risk by disclosing his personal information to the lawyer of the person subject to the application.

Police investigated and agree the officer failed to appropriately manage the complainant's personal information. They apologised to the complainant and the officer's conduct was addressed through an employment process.

The Authority reviewed the Police investigation and agrees with the findings and the outcome.
