Off duty Police officer from Canterbury District uses Police ID to avoid paying entry fee
In February 2018, Police notified the Authority of an incident, where an off-duty officer from Canterbury District bypassed a queue and avoided paying a fee to enter a bar. The officer presented his Police ID and dishonestly told security staff that he wanted to check the bar for underage drinkers. He briefly entered the bar before the manager asked him to leave.
Police commenced criminal and employment proceedings against the employee. They found there was sufficient evidence to charge the officer with obtaining a benefit by deception but did not do so due to public interest considerations.
The officer's conduct was instead addressed through an employment process. The Authority reviewed the Police investigation and agreed with the finding and outcome.
