Complaint of excessive use of force in the rear of a patrol vehicle

13 November 2019

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a complaint that an officer used excessive force in the rear of a patrol vehicle while transporting an arrested person back to the police station.

The Police investigation found that the complainant was not complying with the officer's instructions and had resisted attempts by Police to arrest him, struggled violently in the car and resisted being searched. The Police concluded the force used to overcome the resistance was lawful and reasonable.

The Authority agreed with the Police outcome.
