Prisoner transport vehicle crashes near Wharerata Hills after skidding on black ice

21 October 2019

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a complaint that when the prisoner transport van he was in crashed, he was kept locked inside it and was not offered medical care.

The investigation found the driver of the vehicle was not at fault and the cause of the crash was likely black ice. The prisoners decided to remain in the vehicle as it was warmer than outside, and all had received medical attention from a paramedic at the scene and were then assessed by a doctor at the Police Station. Therefore, the complaint was not upheld.

The Authority agreed with the outcome of the Police investigation.
