Allegation of excessive force - Whangarei

29 October 2019

A man accused police officers of deliberately breaking his ankle during his arrest following a burglary in Northland. Police went to an alarm activation and saw the man jump from the roof of a building. He was caught by a police dog after a short chase. The man alleged an officer broke his ankle by stomping on it. Medical evidence suggests the injury most likely happened when the man jumped from the roof. Police carried out an investigation and determined that Police did not cause the man's injury. The Authority oversaw the Police investigation and completed its independent review which agreed with the Police finding.
