Fleeing driver in Wellington collided with two vehicles during a Police pursuit

4 August 2020

The Authority oversaw an investigation into a pursuit in Wellington. Police attempted to stop a vehicle which was displaying incorrect registration plates. The vehicle did not stop, and Police began a pursuit. During the pursuit, the fleeing driver struck a traffic island, damaging one of its tyres. The fleeing driver continued and collided with a further two vehicles before stopping. No one was injured during the pursuit. Police found the risks of pursuing the vehicle had been properly assessed, however, the commentary of the pursuit could have been more detailed.

The findings of the investigation were addressed with the officers directly. The Authority agrees with this outcome.
