Police vehicle collided with pedestrians in the Wellington District

6 April 2020

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a complaint where an officer driving a marked Police car collided with two people using a pedestrian crossing in Wellington. One of the pedestrians later reported significant bruising but at the time of the crash, she told the officer she wasn't injured. The officer apologised and reported the collision to his supervisor who spoke with the pedestrians who confirmed they were not injured. The officer was issued with a written traffic warning.

An employment investigation found the crash was not dealt with according to Police policy. A formal apology was issued to the complainant and she was reimbursed for medical expenses. Remedial action was taken with both the officer and his supervisor for how the accident was dealt with. The Authority agrees with the outcome of the investigation.
