Allegation of excessive force - Bay of Plenty

9 April 2020

On 23 October 2018 an authorised officer, on duty in the custody hub at Waikato Police station, punched a prisoner once in the face following a racist comment from the prisoner. The prisoner described her own behaviour as "annoying".

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an allegation that the authorised officer had used excessive force when dealing with a female in custody.

The officer was charged with common assault. He admitted the charge and pleaded guilty and was later discharged without conviction. He was also dealt with through an employment process which resulted in an outcome that the Authority considered appropriate.
