Police pursuit in Waikato District should have been abandoned

6 April 2020

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into the pursuit of a speeding motorcyclist. Police considered the rider was travelling in a dangerous manner and was placing the public at risk. The pursuit ended when a Police car was used to cut the rider off, resulting in a minor collision which caused the rider to fall off his bike. He did not sustain any serious injuries.

The investigation found that during the pursuit the Police officer did not adequately assess or report the risks involved and the pursuit should not have continued. The officer's conduct was addressed through an employment process which applied an appropriate outcome.
