Officer in Auckland fails to stop after driving into another vehicle

17 August 2020

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a complaint that an officer collided with another vehicle when driving to an urgent incident but failed to stop.

The investigation found the officer had driven carelessly but there was not sufficient evidence to determine whether the officer or his passenger were aware they had hit the other vehicle as they both denied this. The complainant received apologies from the Police and the officer. While Police overlooked the time limit for issuing the officer with an infringement notice, he did receive a written traffic warning for careless driving and his conduct was dealt with through an employment process which applied an appropriate outcome.
