Review of use of taser by Police when apprehending an offender who had escaped following arrest

9 July 2020

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation involving an officer from the Bay of Plenty who deployed a Taser into the back of an offender, who had escaped custody by running away from the officers after they told him he was under arrest.

Police found the officer's actions were reasonable and justified under the circumstances and did not breach Police Taser policy. This finding is based on the particular facts of the case, where the direction in which the offender ran put him, officers, and the public at risk of serious harm, and the Taser was used in order to prevent more serious injury.

The Authority is satisfied with how the Police conducted their investigation and the outcomes they reached.
