Sergeant's unprofessional comments inadvertently recorded on a Constables voicemail

15 June 2020

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a report that a sergeant from Auckland City District left an unprofessional voicemail on a constable's work mobile phone in December 2019.

The sergeant had failed to disconnect the call after leaving the constable a message and was recorded using offensive language while making disparaging comments about the constable to a colleague.

The sergeant acknowledged making the comments, expressed regret, and apologised to the constable. Police upheld the matter and took appropriate action with the officer to address the conduct.

The Authority's final review of the Police investigation agreed with the finding and the outcome.
