Officer from Wellington District misled senior colleague about a charity boxing event

24 March 2020

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation where it was alleged an officer misled a senior sergeant about the type of charity boxing event he was helping to organise. The senior sergeant was reviewing an alcohol licence application for the event and asked the officer questions about the event. During an initial discussion, the officer allegedly claimed the event only involved non-boxing combat sports and therefore did not need to be approved by the NZ Professional Boxing Association. When the senior sergeant later challenged this claim, the officer accepted the event included boxing bouts.

Police carried out an employment investigation and found the officer had initially misled his supervisor about the event. The officer was sanctioned, and the Authority agrees with this outcome.
