Fleeing driver policy not followed - Bay of Plenty

24 March 2020

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation involving the failure of a Police patrol to disengage with a fleeing vehicle, once the pursuit has been abandoned. Once a pursuit is abandoned, Police policy requires all police units involved to reduce speed to comply with the posted speed limit, deactivate patrol lights and sirens, and stop and report their location.

Police determined that the officers involved should not have continued to follow the fleeing vehicle after the pursuit was abandoned and that the decision to do so was contrary to Police Fleeing Driver policy. Police also determined that the Pursuit Controller should have advised all vehicles involved that the pursuit was abandoned. These matters were addressed with the staff involved.

The Authority agrees with the Police findings and outcome.
