Police officer charged with assault

1 May 2020

In April 2017 the Authority received complaints from two men who alleged they had been assaulted by Police when arrested in Palmerston North. The incident occurred on Main Street in the city centre when Police intervened in what appeared to be a fight involving the two men outside a local night club.

Following a Police investigation, a Police Officer was charged with assaulting one of the men and he was convicted in the Palmerston North District Court. The Officer is no longer a sworn member of New Zealand Police. There was insufficient evidence to charge any officer for the other complaint.

The Authority reviewed the Police investigation and agreed with the findings and outcome.
