Police Officer in the Bay of Plenty District resigns after an investigation into the inappropriate use of the Police's National Intelligence Application (NIA) system

15 May 2020

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a notification where it was alleged an officer accessed information in the Police's national database without a legitimate purpose.

Concern was raised when the officer accessed information on an active, high profile murder case he was not involved in. Police notified the Authority and commenced an employment investigation. This found the officer accessed NIA on many occasions without a legitimate purpose, thereby breaching Police's code of conduct and policy.

Police initiated an employment process, but the officer resigned before this could be concluded.

The Authority agrees Police took appropriate action to address this incident.
