Bay of Plenty failed to complete sexual assault investigation in a timely manner

26 August 2021

The Authority oversaw a Police Policy, Practice and Procedure review following a complaint Police had taken too long to investigate sexual assault claims in Bay of Plenty District. The alleged assaults occurred on 1 January 2018 and at the time of the complaint, two and a half years later, no resolution had been communicated to the complainant.

The Police review found that, while the investigation had been sound, there was no reasonable explanation for the delay in its completion. Police have apologised to the complainant's family for the delay.

The Authority agrees with the outcomes of the Police review.
