Allegation of officer pressuring a witness to make a statement in Southern District

16 February 2021

The Authority oversaw a police investigation into an allegation that a police officer had placed undue pressure on a potential witness to provide a statement. The witness alleged she was told by the officer he could influence her partner's release on bail and then threatened that he would ensure her children would not be returned to her custody if she didn't provide the statement.

The police investigation found no evidence to support the allegation. Subsequently Police charged the witness with perverting the course of justice and she was convicted in the Dunedin District Court.

The Authority agrees with the findings of the police investigation.
