Complaint alleging officer assaulted a family member

6 July 2021

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a complaint alleging an officer assaulted a family member sometime during 2017, before the officer joined Police.

Police undertook a criminal investigation. During that investigation, the officer explained that he had punched the complainant once in self-defence, after the complainant had assaulted him. The Police investigation found there was insufficient evidence to charge the officer with assault.

The Authority agreed with the investigation findings and acknowledged it was not appropriate for Police to undertake a formal employment process with the officer.
