Allegations of failure to investigate and conflict of interest in Bay of Plenty upheld

8 July 2021

The Authority oversaw an investigation into an allegation an officer failed to investigate an incident in Bay of Plenty, following a call to Police about the behaviour of a man sunbathing naked on the beach. The officer initially closed the case, stating no offences had been committed, without making any inquiries. The officer later reopened it to speak with the complainant. During a phone call to the complainant, the officer disclosed personal information that highlighted a conflict of interest with regards to his handling of the matter and link to the suspected offender.

Police completed an employment investigation, where the allegations were upheld. Police also found that the officer breached the Police code of conduct in the process. The Authority agrees with the findings and the steps taken to address the officer's conduct.
