Off-duty officer charged with assault

30 March 2021

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an allegation an off-duty police officer assaulted a member of the public at an event in Counties Manukau. The officer was charged with assault, but the court dismissed the charge.

Police then conducted an employment investigation into the officer's actions and determined that his behaviour breached the code of conduct by fighting in a public place and bringing Police into disrepute. Police acknowledge there were significant and unnecessary delays with the investigation resulting in Police discontinuing the formal disciplinary process.

The Authority agrees with the Police investigations.
