Review of Police actions following an offender stealing a Police patrol vehicle

4 May 2021

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a notification from Canterbury District concerning Police actions during an incident where an offender stole a Police patrol vehicle following a traffic stop.

The Police review of the incident highlighted errors made by the attending officers, which resulted in keys being left in the Police vehicle. Learning opportunities were identified for staff members involved concerning best practice and decision-making. Police have provided their frontline staff with a piece of equipment to attach to their uniform to safeguard their patrol vehicle keys and negate the opportunity for a similar incident occurring in the future.

The Authority is satisfied with how the Police conducted their review of this incident and the outcomes they reached.
