Off-duty Police officer in the Waikato involved in road rage incident

5 May 2021

The Authority oversaw the Police investigation into a complaint that an off-duty Police officer engaged in a violent altercation with another driver during a road rage incident. Police investigated the matter and acknowledged both parties generally behaved poorly.

The other driver was charged with assault and the matter went through an alternative resolution process. Witness statements did not support any criminal charges against the officer.

Police conducted an employment process and found the officer did not assault the other driver but the overall behaviour was undesirable. Police apologised to the driver for the officer's general behaviour. The Authority agrees with the Police decisions and the outcomes.
