The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a notification alleging officers from the Waitemata District used excessive force on a compliant 14-year-old following a pursuit of a stolen car. The officers placed a knee on the young person's head and pulled him off the ground by his hoodie which tightened around his neck in a chokehold.
Police conducted criminal and employment investigations into the matter. The officers were not criminally charged but received sanctions and completed training around decision-making and use of force. Police apologised to the family who declined a restorative process meeting, but indicated they were pleased with the outcome.
