Police officer found to have accessed confidential Police information for non-work-related purposes

16 November 2021

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation about an historical allegation that a Bay of Plenty officer accessed the Police database for non-work related purposes, and disclosed some of that information to an individual he knew in a personal capacity. It was also alleged the officer attempted to persuade the individual to send inappropriate photographs to him in exchange for providing the requested information.

The Police investigation determined the officer had improperly obtained information from the Police database and disclosed it. Also the officer did request a personal photograph from the individual in return for providing the information. These actions breached the Code of Conduct and applicable Police policies. Subsequently, the officer received an employment sanction from Police.

The Authority is satisfied with how Police conducted the investigation and the outcome reached.
