Officer in the Waikato accused of breaching a trespass notice, taking his girlfriend with him in the police vehicle when he was on duty and of accessing inappropriate material on his phone

14 September 2021

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an allegation an officer had gone to his ex-girlfriends address from which he was trespassed, twice in one evening. His ex-girlfriend also told Police he allowed her to go with him in the Police vehicle while he was on duty and he also regularly accessed child pornography websites.

A criminal investigation found there was sufficient evidence to charge him with trespass, but his ex-girlfriend did not support charging him. An analysis of his phone showed that he had not accessed any inappropriate material.

An employment investigation found the officer had allowed his ex-girlfriend to ride in the Police vehicle and his actions (including the trespass matters) were dealt with via an appropriate employment sanction.

The Authority agreed with the findings and the outcome.
