Corruption by officer in Canterbury District

4 April 2022

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into concerns an officer accessed and provided Police information to a woman in return for sexual favours. Analysis of the woman’s phone as part of a separate investigation, disclosed she had texted the officer to ask him to get information for her.

Police were hampered in their investigation into the officer’s actions because the woman died before being interviewed. Ultimately, Police decided there was insufficient evidence to prove the officer committed offences of corruption and using a computer system for a dishonest purpose.

Police decided not to interview the officer before closing the criminal investigation.

The officer resigned during the subsequent employment process.
