Force used during arrest was reasonable

17 January 2022

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into the use of excessive force during the arrest of a man in Waikato.

Officers were attempting to arrest a man who had tried to break into a property and then ran from Police. When apprehended by a Police dog, the male punched the dog and punched out at Police. He also spat at Police.

The Police investigation found that the force used by Police was reasonable and proportionate. One officer received an employment outcome in relation to professionalism and leadership.

The Authority agrees with the Police findings and outcome.
