Bay of Plenty - Investigation of offences related to online harassment

5 July 2022

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a complaint officers failed to properly investigate offences under the Harmful Digital Communications Act 2015. Between 2017 and 2020, the complainant told Police that members of an online forum were targeting her. She alleged members of the group threatened her, encouraged her to take her own life, and also damaged and stole her property.

Police agreed to investigate how staff handled the original crime reports but were unable to obtain a statement from the complainant. Police reviewed the available information and found staff appropriately investigated and responded to the original reports.

On reviewing the available information, the Authority agrees with the Police findings and outcome.
