Officer investigated for failure to undertake correct process in Bay of Plenty

5 July 2022

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an allegation that a Police officer stationed in Tokoroa did not undertake correct process when attending a traffic crash.

On 28 July 2020, Police were called to a single car crash on State Highway One, Tokoroa. The driver of the car was suspected of being intoxicated and made threats of self-harm and to others present.

The officer did not undertake the correct breath alcohol testing or mental health procedures with the male, allowing him instead to return home with a support person. The male was later summonsed to appear in Court on traffic related charges.

Police found that the officer had not complied with the relevant law or policy. They reached an employment outcome which the Authority considers was satisfactory.
