Otago Officer breached Police code of conduct

9 May 2022

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation of an allegation an officer breached the Police Code of Conduct by inappropriately “snapchatting” and visiting a woman while on duty.

The investigation found the officer had a non-intimate relationship with the woman and his engagement with her online and in person, while in uniform, made her feel uncomfortable. The investigation also found the officer had inappropriately accessed the Police computer database and searched the details of both the woman and one of her friends.

Police dealt with the officer’s breaches by way of an employment process, and he was sanctioned.

The Authority agrees with the Police findings and outcome.
