Officer investigated for failing to conduct a search of a detainee

12 May 2022

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a notification from Wellington District of a relieving custody supervisor who failed to ensure a search of a detainee was conducted when the man was processed into custody. The employment investigation identified the officer’s conduct fell short of the required standard. By not searching the detainee when the man was processed into custody, there were potential safety risks for the detainee himself, Police staff and medical professionals who dealt with the detainee during his time in custody. The officer acknowledged their mistake and was provided refresher training on custody policies and practice.

The Authority is satisfied with how the Police conducted their investigation and the outcome they reached.
