Use of force on an arrested man at Taupo justified

24 May 2022

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an incident where Police officers used force to arrest a man who had punched an officer unconscious.

On the afternoon of 30 June 2021, several Taupo officers arrested the man after he had assaulted the officer. The man resisted violently and was Tasered and physically restrained. When the man was carried to a Police vehicle, he bit an officer on the thigh. In response, two other officers present used a knee strike and a punch to protect their colleague.

The Police investigation found the two officers were acting in defence of their colleague and the force was reasonable and proportionate in the circumstances.

The Authority agrees with this finding.
