Counties Manukau Officer investigated for failing to surrender a prohibited firearm before the end of the Prohibited Firearms Amnesty and Buy-back

24 May 2022

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation where a Police officer allegedly failed to surrender a prohibited firearm during the 2019 Firearms Amnesty and Buyback.

Police concluded that as the officer had no criminal intent to retain the firearm, the evidential test for prosecution was not met. However, the officer’s decision-making was poor, and Police addressed this with him during an employment process.

The Authority is satisfied with how the Police conducted their investigation and the outcomes they reached.
