Police actions in response to noise complaints justified

25 May 2022

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a complaint alleging that officers used excessive force when assisting a Council Noise Control Officer to enforce a noise abatement notice in Hamilton.

While on the property to search and seize the source of the excessive noise, a number of adults and young people became aggressive towards Police, and a brief physical struggle ensued between officers and a 14-year-old boy.

An excerpt of this struggle was posted on social media which prompted a person, unrelated to the incident and unknown to the people involved, to complain about the officers’ actions.

Police conducted an investigation and found that the officers use of force was reasonable in the circumstances.

The Authority agrees with this finding.
