Allegation that an off-duty officer pushed pregnant partner to the ground

31 May 2022

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into whether an off duty officer in Hamilton assaulted his pregnant partner, pushing her to the ground during an argument.

Before the officer left the house, he attempted to pack baby clothes he had purchased into a bag to take with him. His partner tried to grab the bag to stop him from taking them. During the tussle, she fell to the ground, landing on her stomach.

The officer recorded a portion of the incident on his mobile phone. It is unclear from the footage how the woman landed on the ground; whether the officer pushed her, or she lost her balance and fell over.

Police found there was insufficient evidence that the officer had pushed his partner. The Authority agrees with this finding.
