Officer prosecuted after using excessive force during an arrest in Wellington

13 April 2023

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an incident where an officer used excessive force against a person who was under arrest.

Following a Police investigation, the officer was charged with assault. The charge was dismissed at Court after the victim of the assault refused to participate and did not wish for the matter to proceed.

An employment process found the officer’s actions breached the Police Code of Conduct and the officer received an employment outcome.

The Authority considers Police took appropriate action against the officer and agrees with the outcome of the investigations.
