Eastern District: Officer failed to appropriately report a missing Taser

11 December 2023

The Authority oversaw a police investigation into a missing Taser. The investigation determined the Taser became dislodged from the officer’s holster during a disorder incident and was subsequently picked up by a member of the public.

Police found that a mechanical failure of the holster was the likely cause of the Taser becoming dislodged and the officer would not have realised this at the time. However, police found the officer failed to promptly report the missing Taser and failed to follow instructions from supervisors.

Police found the officer’s actions breached their code of conduct and caused avoidable delays in recovering the Taser. The officer was given a confidential employment sanction.

The Authority agrees with the findings of the investigation.
