Waikato District: Police employee inappropriately accessed records for personal reasons

27 February 2023

The Authority oversaw an investigation into allegations a Police staff member had accessed records on the Family Safety Services database (FSS) for non-policing purposes. FSS contains information belonging to Police and other partner agencies shared under the integrated service response memorandum to respond to family harm incidents.

Police conducted an audit and determined the employee accessed their own records and those relating to their family members. Further investigation determined this access was for personal reasons– not a policing purpose. Police determined this was a breach or policy and a conflict of interest. Police upheld the allegations and took appropriate employment action. The staff member no longer works for Police.

The Authority agrees with the outcome of the Police investigation and actions taken.
