No evidence of excessive force used during arrest of 15-year-old in Auckland District

31 January 2023

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation of a complaint that Counties Manukau officers had used excessive force against a 15-year-old when arresting him for burglary.

At about 4am on 12 February 2022, four officers located the youth at a relative’s home and arrested him for burglary of a local liquor store. The youth struggled with officers when they tried to put him into a patrol car. Some members of the youth’s family who were present claimed the youth had been beaten by officers and bitten by a Police dog.

The investigation by Police found no evidence that officers beat the youth or that a Police dog had been set on him.

The Authority is satisfied with the investigation and outcome.
