Waikato Police apologise for failure to prosecute caused by delay in their investigation

13 June 2023

The Authority received a complaint about the lack of appropriate investigation by Police into a collision where a driver hit the complainant’s car and failed to stop. Despite the complainant making multiple attempts to follow up on the investigation, Police failed to advance the investigation appropriately, and the time limit for bringing charges expired. The Authority asked Police to apologise to the complainant and explain why prosecution was no longer available, which they agreed to. Police also agreed to also speak to the officer involved about progressing investigations in a timely manner.

The Authority agrees with this resolution.
